Terrance Weinzierl created a custom typeface from scratch, Canton. He was inspired by the typography found in our currency; a Modern serif style common in engraving from the 19th century.
Each state, each pair of letters, has a stripe, the red and white which represents the original colonies. In that way, each state has a piece of the colonies in it. So, it’s a reminder to be bold sometimes, like a revolting colony and to make a change when change is needed.
Like a zoom on the canton part of the flag, Terrance swapped the stars for postal abbreviation of the states, and arranged them in order in which they joined the Union. The single letter or even pair might be strong as they are, but a whole team of them creates something more powerful, flexible, and greater.
